# Product Rules

> Set up "if this, then that" rules so new products get their tags, titles, descriptions, and product types filled in for you instead of by hand.

Set up "if this, then that" rules so new products get their tags, titles, descriptions, and product types filled in for you instead of by hand.

**Where to find it:** [Open Product Rules in AIM](https://aimventory.com/product-rules) — you will be asked to sign in first.

## What you can do here

* Write a rule that says "when a product looks like this, set it up like that"
* See exactly which of your products a rule would match before you save it
* Let AIM suggest rules based on how you have already set up similar products
* Put rules in order, so the most specific one wins
* Turn a rule off without deleting it, and check what it changed in Execution History

## Buttons, fields, and controls

| Control | Where | What it does | When to use it |

| Search rules | Left panel | Finds a rule by name. | Use it once you have more than a handful of rules. |
| Active only | Filters | Hides rules you have switched off. | Turn it off when you are looking for a rule you paused earlier. |
| Suggested Rules | Above the rules table | Rules AIM noticed you could have, based on products you already set up the same way by hand. | Check here first — if you have tagged twenty Jordans the same way, the rule you need is probably already written for you. |
| Refresh suggestions | Suggested Rules panel | Looks at your products again and rebuilds the suggestion list. | Use it after you have set up a batch of new products by hand. |
| Priority | Rules table column | Decides which rule wins when two rules match the same product. Lower numbers run first. | Give your most specific rules the lowest numbers so a broad "all Nike" rule cannot overwrite a precise "Nike Dunk Low" one. |
| Conditions | Rule editor | The "when this is true" part — product name, SKU, brand, model, release date, retail price, gender, pre-owned condition, and more. | Start broad (brand) and narrow down (model, SKU pattern) until the preview count looks right. |
| Rule Actions | Rule editor | The "then do this" part — add or remove tags, change the title or description, set SEO text, set the vendor, product type, Shopify category, or URL handle. | Use it for the setup work you would otherwise repeat on every new product. |
| Preview matching products | Rule editor, under the conditions | Shows how many of your products the rule matches right now, with a few examples. | Always, before saving. If the number is far bigger or smaller than you expected, your conditions are not saying what you think. |
| Execution History | Rules table row | Shows when a rule ran and what it changed. | Use it when a product came out looking wrong and you want to know which rule did it. |
| Status (Active / Inactive) | Rules table column | Switches a rule on or off without deleting it. | Switch a rule off while you investigate, rather than deleting it and losing the setup. |

## How to: Tag every new pair from one brand automatically

1. Click "Create Rule" and give it a clear name, such as "Tag all Jordans".
2. Under Conditions, choose "Brand Name", the operator "equals", and type Jordan.
3. Click "Preview matching products". Check the count and the examples look right.
4. Under Rule Actions, choose "Add Tag" and enter the tag, for example jordan.
5. Set a Priority. Leave broad rules at a higher number so specific rules can win.
6. Save. From now on, new Jordan products get the tag without you touching them.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  A rule with Brand Name equals Jordan and the action Add Tag "jordan" previews as "Matches 1,240 products" — that is roughly your whole Jordan catalog, so the condition is right.
</Tip>

## How to: Check a rule before it touches anything

1. Open the rule and look at the Conditions.
2. Click "Preview matching products".
3. Read the match count first, then the sample product names.
4. If the count is 0, a condition is too strict — try one condition at a time.
5. If the count is your entire catalog, a condition is too loose or missing.
6. Only save once the preview matches what you meant.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  You meant "Dunk Low only" but the preview says 3,180 products — the condition was left on Brand Name equals Nike, so it caught everything Nike makes.
</Tip>

## How to: Use a rule AIM suggests

1. Look at the "Suggested Rules" panel above the table.
2. Read the Pattern and the Confidence — the pattern is what AIM noticed you doing by hand.
3. Click through to Examples to see which products it is based on.
4. Click "Review" to open it in the rule editor.
5. Change anything you disagree with, preview it, then save.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  AIM notices that all 42 of the New Balance products you set up got the same product type, and suggests a rule so the next one does too.
</Tip>

## How to: Fix a product a rule set up wrong

1. Open Execution History on the rules table to see which rules have been running.
2. Find the rule whose action matches the wrong value.
3. Set that rule to Inactive so it stops making things worse.
4. Edit its conditions to be more specific, and preview until only the products you mean are matched.
5. Set the rule back to Active.

<Tip title="Real-world example">
  Every pre-owned pair got the "new" tag, because the rule was missing the "Is Pre-Owned" condition.
</Tip>

## Good to know

* Product rules handle setup details — tags, titles, descriptions, product types, vendor, and category. Prices are set by Pricing Rules, and where things get listed is set by Listing Rules.
* Lower priority numbers run first. When a broad rule keeps overwriting a specific one, the specific one needs a lower number.
* Preview is free and changes nothing. There is no reason to save a rule you have not previewed.
* If you set up the same kind of product by hand more than a few times, check Suggested Rules — the rule you need may already be waiting.
